I'll start by saying I have little to very little knowledge of art. I have read some of the entries in this guest book, and I am out of my element. I do know one thing..I know what appeals to my eye. Forgive me if I sound like an idiot. I'm sure you won't mind. We share at least one brain cell, we both love the work of John William Waterhouse. Many, many years ago when the internet was a new toy for me I was doing a random search for something and an image appeared on my screen. It was a lovely woman peering into a little golden box. I instantly connected to it somehow and thought it was the most interest, intriguing, beautiful thing I had ever seen. I saved the picture and found myself pulling it up all the time to just gaze at..No other piece of art had effected me like this one. I loved everything about it. The woman, the dress she was wearing, the background, the box.. just all of it. My young daughters saw it all the time and we would sit together and try to guess what the woman was seeing in the little box. Some nights I would read them their bedtime story and then they would want to play "guess what's in the box". I finally decided that I had to know who painted it. I looked for it on different websites but I didn't have the name of the artist or the name of the painting. Over the years I have searched from time to time, but no luck. I did find many other paintings that I fell in love with, but never the one I was looking for. Until today!!!!!! And to my utter amazement, nearly all of the other paintings that I fell in love with are in this collection. How is that possible? The same artist created all of my favorites and I didn't even know it until today. Thank you so much for all your hard work. This site is a very well put together tribute that oozes the passion you feel for his work and that I now feel about an amazing artist. John William Waterhouse has managed to capture the look of a woman on the outside that matches how I feel on the inside. And he has done it over and over and over again. "Psyche Opening the Golden Box" lead me here... but I love them all now. Again, Thank you so much...I can't wait to tell my daughters (who are teenagers now) that I FINALLY found the artist and the painting and so much more.

this site is a real dedication to the works of J.W.Waterhouse. It was difficult for me to find the entire collection of his works in a book but this site has made my job easier. Now, whenever I want to, I can revisit the site and send postcards to my love.

Thank you so much for this wonderful site, there isn't another like it. Waterhouse is amazing, I especially love his depictions of myth, they're always exactly how I pictured it.

Hello -- I'm writing to request you change the title given to one of the images at your site. The drawing titled, 'Study of Miss Muriel Foster' should just be 'Study in Chalk' ... or 'Study for Lamia'. Thank you for considering this. Also, thank you for all of your efforts in creating such a beautiful site dedicated to the art of John William Waterhouse!

Lovely site, thank you. Great painter -- I had no idea there were so many Waterhouse pictures! Have always loved his works ever since discovering The Lady of Shalott at the Tate in the 1960s when she seemed an amazingly contemporary girl. But the paint surface seemed to be disentegrating -- is this a conservation problem with his paintings?

I LOVE this site!!! I got to know Waterhouse in Scotland, where I found an art print of Ophelia by the pond and, later on, a calendar I immediately bought. I also trried to find out a few more facts and paintings from Waterhouse: Your site is the very best! Everytime I´m in the www I have no choice, I MUST visit your site!

I had to read the poem "La Belle Dame Sans Merci" in high school and a picture of this painting accompanied the entry. I loved the poem and the painting. Later in life, while looking for prints to decorate my house, I remembered this picture. I was pleasantly surprised to find so many literary characters brought to life by Mr. Waterhouse. I particularly love Juliet and Ophelia, as they are two of my favorite Shakespeare characters. Being a fan of Arthurian legend, the Lady of Shallot is also a favorite, as well as the lovely patron saint of music and the martyr I was named after, Cecilia.

This is by far the most beautiful and informative site I have found dedicated to my favorite artist, Mr. J.W. Waterhouse. My absolute favorite of his paintings is the 1894 version of OPHELIA; it captivated me the first time I saw it. I now own it and countless others of his paintings in print or art card form, and I look forward to the day when I can see ST. EULALIA and his first LADY OF SHALOTT at the Tate Gallery in London.

I am lucky enough to live in Adelaide, where Circe Invidiosa is located. It was one of the first paintings that took my breath away, and it still does today. It is one of the most beloved pieces in the Art Gallery of SA, and it is a rare thing to have people walk past this painting and not stop. This site is awesome! Thanks for putting it together.
